Gagan and his controversies

In recent years, Nepal’s political culture has seen changes from variation of leaders who have come from vested interest to being burden to the name of leadership. There are few who have spoken thunder words and when the time came they did nothing. Just like that Nepal's political world has again seen some changes in facing the so called political changes where a young political leader Gagan Thapa has been made Health minister. Gagan who is in his late thirties represents the young group of leaders who have been seen pointing fingers at their own party of orthodox party politics and sad political culture.
Though regarded as a dynamic youth leader but his popularity decreased with the limitation of his controversies.
In his past he was seen voicing issues against Ghaite, one of the most wanted criminals in Nepal police who was shot dead by the Nepal police. Ghaite was a hardcore criminal who was politically linked and Gagan was seen voicing human rights issues against the killing of Ghaite. Apart from that in yet another controversial issue, he was seen supporting “IAMWITHDRKC” Campaign.

This campaign has been going on since past few years in context of bringing transparency and accountability in the health industry. Prior being a minister he was noted and reported voicing support to DR KC’s campaign but now after being the same health ministry he is silent about the issue.
May be he is working towards studying the issue but from his side these days he lacks speaking anything about the campaign and the whole issue.
I think Nepal’s political culture needs a fresh starts where morale, ethic and values need to be recrafted within the political culture and practice. If you look at current practice political leaders of Nepal like dogs, they bark in ways of catching attention but when it comes to action they are like balloons.

The lack of leadership and the generation gap in Nepal’s political culture has frustratingly resulted in involvement of crime, corruption and compromise of public welfare where political leaders are busy in creating values for their post and position. Public welfare has just been an issue of debate and controversy that not only gives them opportunity to manipulate. Nepal needs new face for leadership in defining the role and governance of public welfare. Public governance or welfare need better address in terms of real time action and practice. Government’s role should not just be prescribed to limitation of bureaucracy but should be proactive in safeguarding the rights and responsibility of people.
